I Am a Cyborg, But Not in the Way Silicon Valley Means It
The first cyborg moment of my day is rarely dramatic.
It’s usually a small buzz on my wrist while I’m standing in the kitchen, halfway between sleep and wake, trying to remember if I actually sent the message I promised to send.
Sometimes the buzz is gentle—“call Mum after lunch.” Sometimes it’s rude—“meeting in 10 minutes.” Sometimes it’s a quiet nudge that saves me from a future version of me who is stressed and apologizing.
Nothing about that is sci‑fi.
It’s just a human nervous system extended by a device that remembers what I forget.
So yes: I’m a cyborg.
But not in the way Silicon Valley means it.
Their cyborg is a brand. Mine is a practice.
Silicon Valley’s cyborg story tends to sound like one of these:
- upgrade your biology
- merge with the machine
- optimize everything
- become unstoppable
It’s often aesthetic. It’s often performative. It’s often a proxy for status: a new identity you can purchase, display, and evangelize.
My cyborg life is boring by comparison.
It’s the opposite of spectacle.
It’s a set of quiet, repeatable practices that make me a little more trustworthy to the people I love, and a little less at the mercy of my own chaos.
The point isn’t to become superhuman.
The point is to become more human—with support.
I don’t have implants. I have dependencies.
When people hear “cyborg,” they imagine hardware under skin.
My augmentation is mostly software and habit:
- a calendar that is more honest than my memory
- a notes system that catches the sentence before it evaporates
- a task list that turns vague anxiety into named obligations
- automation that reduces the number of times I have to re-decide the same thing
- an AI layer that can hold context and help me think when my brain is tired
None of this is glamorous.
But it changes who I am over time.
Because when your life is entangled with machines, your personality starts to include your systems.
Not in a dystopian way.
In the same way a person who always carries a notebook becomes “the kind of person who remembers,” or a person who always trains becomes “the kind of person who can run.”
The tool becomes part of the self.
That’s what a cyborg is: not metal and lasers, but a self whose boundaries include artifacts.
My real augmentations are artifacts, not apps
The deepest lie of modern software is that the app is the unit of change.
It’s not.
The unit of change is the artifact: the thing that persists when the interface is closed.
An artifact can be:
- a planning document
- a running list of commitments
- a protocol you follow when conflict shows up
- an “inbox” where raw life gets captured before it rots into stress
- a reflection log that keeps your lessons from resetting to zero
This is why I’ve been building OXYMUS the way I have: not as a chatbot, but as a life OS.
Not because I want to talk to a machine more.
Because I want my life to have continuity.
Continuity is the real augmentation.
The ability to carry intention forward across days, mood swings, exhaustion, travel, conflict, joy, and the ordinary entropy of being alive.
The cyborg question is not “can I?” It’s “should I?”
There’s a moment most people hit when they start integrating tools deeply:
They realize the tool can do more than they expected.
It can:
- remind them earlier
- track more signals
- infer patterns
- predict outcomes
- surface “insights”
And then the seduction arrives: what if I let it run more of my life?
This is where the Silicon Valley cyborg narrative gets dangerous—not because augmentation is evil, but because it defaults to a specific value system:
- legibility over dignity
- optimization over meaning
- metrics over lived reality
- compliance over consent
It starts treating a person like a business.
I don’t want to be a business.
I want to be a person.
So my cyborg practice has a few rules.
Rule 1: Consent beats automation
If an automation feels like it’s happening to me, it will eventually rot into resentment.
The goal isn’t “maximum automation.”
The goal is consented support.
That means:
- I choose what gets automated, and why.
- I keep override paths easy.
- I let myself have “manual days” without shame.
- I treat refusal as data, not failure.
When a system nags me, I don’t try to discipline myself harder.
I ask a more honest question: is this system serving my life, or performing productivity at me?
Rule 2: The body is not a dashboard
There’s a kind of cyborg culture that turns the body into a spreadsheet:
sleep score, HRV, steps, calories, zones.
I’m not anti-data. I like feedback. I’m a systems person.
But I’ve noticed something: over-measuring makes me less embodied.
It makes me outsource my own sensing.
I start asking a screen how I feel instead of noticing how I feel.
So I keep the body-side of my cyborg life intentionally low-resolution:
- I use signals as gentle hints, not commandments.
- I trust sensation and mood as real inputs.
- I refuse the story that “what can’t be quantified doesn’t count.”
The cyborg future I want is one where tools help us return to experience—not replace it.
Rule 3: Reduce re-decisions, not aliveness
The best automations in my life don’t make me more efficient.
They make me less exhausted.
They remove re-decisions:
- the same bills, the same recurring reminders, the same “don’t forget” loops
- the same context I keep re-explaining to myself
- the same “where did I put that?” problem
When those are handled, I don’t become a machine.
I become more available for what can’t be automated:
- art
- love
- courage
- difficult conversations
- long attention
Automation should clear space for aliveness.
Not clear aliveness out of the way.
Rule 4: Memory is sacred—handle it like a priest, not an advertiser
If you’re a cyborg, your memory system is part of your soul’s infrastructure.
That sounds dramatic until you notice what memory really does:
It shapes what you believe is possible. It shapes who you forgive. It shapes what you repeat.
So I treat memory with unusual care:
- I avoid systems that monetize attention.
- I prefer artifacts I can export, inspect, and keep.
- I build for durability over novelty.
- I try to keep the “inbox” honest and the archive humane.
If a company’s business model depends on keeping me scrolling, I don’t want them inside my mind.
That’s not paranoia.
That’s boundary.
A small scene: the moment I realized I already crossed the line
I used to talk about “using tools” like I was in charge.
Then I noticed how often I reach for my phone when I’m anxious—not to do anything useful, but to anesthetize uncertainty.
One afternoon I caught myself standing in the hallway, not moving, thumb hovering, opening the same apps in the same order like a ritual:
messages → email → feed → messages again.
No intention. No completion. Just a loop.
That wasn’t me using a tool.
That was a tool using me.
And that was the day the cyborg question became real.
Because once your mind is interwoven with machines, you can’t pretend neutrality.
You have to choose what kind of integration you’re building:
- compulsive integration, driven by reward loops and social pressure
- or intentional integration, driven by values and lived outcomes
The cyborg identity I’m claiming
Here is the version of “cyborg” I can stand behind:
- I admit that my cognition is extended by artifacts.
- I design those artifacts like I’m designing a habitat.
- I optimize for dignity, not metrics.
- I keep the human in the loop where it matters.
- I let my tools become invisible through service.
In this frame, being a cyborg is not a costume.
It’s a form of responsibility.
Because the tools you build around yourself eventually become the tools you build around other people—your friends, your family, your community, your future children, your team.
So I try to practice a cyborg ethic that scales:
- Make the helpful path easy.
- Make the harmful path hard.
- Keep consent explicit.
- Keep exits available.
- Treat attention as a sacred resource.
The real question
I don’t think the coming era is about whether humans will merge with machines.
We already have.
The coming era is about whether we do it with taste.
Whether we do it with boundaries.
Whether we do it with humility—accepting that a system can help without becoming a god, and that a human can be augmented without becoming a product.
That’s the cyborg future I’m building toward:
not the loud one that sells an identity, but the quiet one that makes a life more coherent.
